Systems to Rate the Strength of Scientific Evidence
AHRQ Publication No. 02-E016
http://www.ahrq.gov/clinic/epcsums/strengthsum.htm

This report reviewed more than 100 sources of information on systems for assessing study quality and strength of evidence for systematic reviews and technology assessments. After applying evaluative criteria,19 systems are presented in this report. These systems can be used in producing systematic reviews (evidence summaries) and considering various other sources of knowledge in ways that are transparent for groups working with summaries, clinical practice guidelines and other health-related policy advice.

The following systems have been used most frequently in evidence work conducted in the Academic Center for Evidence-Based Nursing:

  1. Harris RP, Helfand M, Woolf SH, et al. Current methods of the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force: A review of the process. Am J Prev Med 2001;20:21-35

  2. Center for Evidence-Based Medicine. Levels of Evidence and Grades of Recommendations.. Accessed June 12, 2006. Web Page. Available: http://www.cebm.net/levels_of_evidence.asp
