First Annual
2002 Summer Institute on Evidence-Based practice
“Best Practice: Basics and Beyond”

OVERVIEW

The Institute prepares nurses for an increasingly active role in evidence-based practice (EBP) to improve patient care outcomes by translating research into practice. With quality of care, cost control, and patient outcomes as national concerns, nurses can maximize clinical effectiveness through fuller use of scientific evidence in practice. Bringing nurses to a common understanding of EBP will advance our profession and increase interdisciplinary collaboration.

The 2002 Institute focuses on “Best Practice: Basics and Beyond” and presents foundational and intermediate EBP concepts. The Institute curriculum is sequenced to move participants from basic concepts to incorporation of EBP in a variety of professional roles and settings.

During the first two days, major topics related to evidence synthesis, translation, implementation, and impact evaluation of clinical practice changes are presented didactically, followed by application and interaction sessions of case studies. Specific clinical topics (i.e., preventive services, community health, mental health, and pain management) illustrate steps of EBP. During the final day, interactive breakout sessions provide opportunities for nurses to integrate EBP into specific roles in (a) practice, (b) nursing research, (c) nursing education and (d) health care quality improvement by developing an action plan for implementation at their home institution.

Throughout the conference, participants can experience hands-on interaction through exhibits of guidelines, tool kits, and reference management software. Opportunities are offered for participants to interact about their own EBP activities through poster sessions, exhibits, and roundtable luncheon discussions.
